San Martín de los Andes was founded on February 4th, 1898, on a territory owned by the Mapuche community called¨Curruhuinca¨. Nowadays, over a hundred years later, the city still keeps up its traditional mountain features, where the inhabitants have collaborated to keep a balance between urban development- specially the architecture- and natural environment using characteristic materials like stones and wood, essential in this scenery of fairy tales and elfs.
At present, this wonderful hamlet in the mountain range of Los Andes has a population of about 22.432 inhabitants. The economy development is based basically on the tourist activity. It is the main city and the place where most services are offered in the National Park ¨Lanín¨, it is the largest of the province and the head of its quartermaster corps. San Martín de los Andes is the starting point chosen by many tourists for going through the lakes zone. It is located at one of the extremes of the road skirting seven lakes (Camino de los Siete Lagos) that joins this town with the town of Villa la Angostura, being one of the most fascinating journeys due to the beauty of the zone.
